INTERVIEW WITH NUNO OLIVEIRA TO DO PAPEL MAGAZINE
«Technology Driving the Packaging of the Future»
In a sector undergoing constant transformation, where efficiency and sustainability go hand in hand, Roclayer has been establishing itself as an example of industrial modernization. Its commitment to the circular economy, combined with the implementation of a company-wide ERP system, has transformed the way it manages its processes and looks toward the future.
Roclayer – Packaging Compounds is today one of the most consistent and innovative projects in the national technical packaging industry. Based in Vila Velha de Ródão, the company was born from the convergence of industrial tradition and strategic vision, positioning itself as a partner in the production of protective solutions. With roots dating back nearly a century of experience in the paper sector, Roclayer’s story began long before its formal establishment. The origins of the project lie in the former Fábrica de Papel do Simão, founded in 1923, and later in the creation of GOPACA in 1993, a company that would eventually become part of the international group DS Smith. In 2017, the current Roclayer emerged from the need to create a unit specialized in the technical coating of paper, capable of meeting the demands of a market increasingly focused on sustainability, production efficiency, and innovation. “Our company is essentially dedicated to paper extrusion. We work with jumbo paper reels and also carry out flexographic printing, both on paper and on film. That is our core business,” explains Nuno Oliveira.
Circular Economy as a Guiding Principle
Roclayer has embraced the circular economy as one of the pillars of its business model since its inception. The company invested in reusing waste generated from the production process, transforming it into new products and reintegrating it into the value chain. “We are using leftover materials from the process to produce corner protectors and other materials that are used in our own packaging. It’s a project that started in 2017 and makes perfect sense, both from an environmental and an economic perspective,” says the executive. This approach has made it possible to reduce waste, increase production efficiency, and align with the sector’s environmental requirements, while maintaining high quality standards.
An Integrated Operation
Roclayer’s sustained growth has also been built on a strong commitment to digitalization and the integration of internal processes. From an early stage, the company understood that effective production management required a tool capable of centralizing information and providing visibility across all areas. “We are fully integrated. We chose an ERP system that covered all departments from the beginning. Today, we can say that we have a complete ERP, which allows us to manage the company in a much more controlled way,” explains Nuno Oliveira. Over time, new modules were added, in line with the organization’s maturity. Among the most recent are the maintenance modules and the collector portal, which have strengthened operational and financial control. “At this point, we have the system almost entirely implemented. It is very user-friendly, easy to use, and anyone who joins the company can adapt to it quickly,” he adds. More than just an IT tool, the ERP has become a true support for Roclayer’s strategic management, enabling data centralization, process optimization, and improved decision-making.
Vision and Sustainable Growth
For Nuno Oliveira, the success of the implementation was essentially due to a realistic and well-structured approach. “The most important thing is to understand exactly what you want from the system. To have a clear idea of the desired outcome and, from there, build a tailored solution. When we reached the end of the implementation, the feeling was: now we’re really going to start working.” The flexibility of the system has allowed the company to evolve without compromising daily operations, adjusting processes and adding functionalities whenever necessary. Regarding the relationship with Sistrade, Nuno Oliveira is clear: “Whenever we need any changes or something more specific, the support has been immediate. There have never been any obstacles. That makes all the difference in an industrial company like ours.” Currently, Roclayer continues to invest in the modernization of its infrastructure and in the development of new products, focusing on material reuse and reducing environmental impact. “Our goal is to continue growing in a sustainable way, strengthening quality and the circular economy. That is innovation and the path forward,” concludes Nuno Oliveira.
ERP: A Strategic Ally
Implementing an ERP system enables companies to integrate all business areas into a single environment: production, logistics, purchasing, invoicing, maintenance, and human resources. In a demanding industrial sector such as packaging, this integration translates into greater control, fewer errors, improved planning, and a faster response to market needs. [PDF VERSION]
